Castel Nuovo Civic Museum (Maschio Angioino) - Naples

In the years 1279 to 1284 Charles I of Anjou put Pierre de Chaule in charge of erecting a fortress which was destined to become the new residence for the rulers of the Kingdom of Naples.
This castle towers over the flat area which soon became the crux of urban development and political, administrative and military power in the city.
Castel Nuovo, known to Neapolitans as the Maschio Angioino and damaged during the wars of succession between the Angevins and the Aragonese, was rebuilt by a Catalan architect, Guillermo Sagrera, at the behest of Alfonso the Magnanimous.
The CastIe is made up of:
- the "'Armoury Room", where recent restoration has brought to light archaeological evidence of the Ancient Roma period;
- the "Hall of the Barons", the "Sala Major" of the Castle: the impressive setting for royal audiences in the 14th century, completed with frescoes by Giotto, characterised by the 28 metres high vaulted dome which has an oculus in the place of the traditional keystone;
- the "Picture Gallery", that covers two storeys: on the first there are the mostly religious works from the 15th to 18th centuries, and on the second other works from the 18th to 20th centuries, including a collection of 19th century Neapolitan paintings, and two sculptures by Vincenzo Gemito are on display;
- the "Palatine Chapel", which reveals the remains of a cycle of frescoes by Giotto and his school;
- the "Chapel of the Souls in Purgatory", whose interiors present Baroque decorations;
- the "Chapel of St. Francesco di Paola", which sheltered the Saint in 1481 on his way to Paris, decorated in the Baroque style, however, only three works by Nicola Russo remain of its historical splendour.
The triumphal arch framing the entrance to the castle was the work of Tuscan and Catalan sculptors commissioned by Alfonso, and stands as extraordinary proof of the citys readiness to embrace the innovations of the Renaissance.
