PAN - Palazzo of the Arts of Naples

From March 2005, Naples finally also has its own centre of the documentation of contemporary Arts.
In fact, the PAN, Palazzo of the Arts of Naples, is the citys first civic structure for the function of an exclusive and permanent Centre for Contemporary Arts.
The opening of the Palazzo of the Arts has, in this way, given the city a precious space that allows not only a documentation of the various contemporary national and international artistic phenomena, but also the enjoyment, experimentation and research of contemporary art itself.
The PAN is set up in one of Naples most beautiful 18th century buildings, Palazzo Roccella.
It is a real work of art, brought back to its ancient splendour by skilful and advanced restoration (the work on the structural consolidation and static containment of the building is almost invisible thanks to futuristic bindings and carbon fibre protection), which has given back to the city one of its jewels, a building that is the symbol of the history of Naples.
In its over 6000 m2, set out over three floors, the PAN holds cultural expressions that interest all art and its forms of expression, allowing the consultation, display and promotion of more significant works and records of major value in the contemporary period, from painting to sculpture, architecture, photography, design, cinema, video art and comics.
Palazzo Roccella, in the heart of Chiaia quarter, is without doubt the ideal site for a large project for the cultural re-evaluation of the city.
It is a historical and very central site, and the works that are kept there harmonise perfectly within their surroundings.
This harmony is also made possible by the skilful restoration of the interiors, with state of the art illumination and sober and refined designer objects that furnish the interiors of the building, in a combination which is never intrusive, including the paving stones of Vesuvian lava stone, the time worn piperno stone of the grand central stairway and the pale marble work.
The name PAN a white logo on black back-ground, was chosen through a competition of ideas by the Alderman of Culture among young university students and professionals of the sector.
The same system was used for the name, and is a concrete demonstration of the workshop activity and cultural promotion of the Centre for Contemporary Arts, or of the aims followed by the institution of PAN: look to the future, to the new generation of talents, which out city is full of.
The winning name and the logo of the competition were thought of by Alfredo Pavi, from the Arkè communication agency.
It won the first place in the simplicity and immediacy of the definition, perfectly adhering to the cultural project.
The PAN, therefore, was porn as a poly-function centre, destined to host temporary exhibitions, but also as a centre for the documentation of contemporary arts, equipped with paper and digital archives, a specialist library and media library, with strongly experimental and avant-grand workshop activities.
It is a real memory archive, capable of offering a global and articulated view of contemporary art in Naples in the last 40 years.
The PAN was inaugurated in grand style last 26th March, with the exhibition The Given Person. Il dono dellartista, curated by PANs artistic director, Lorand Hegyi.
The Palazzo of the Arts of Naples, immediately acquired a position of excellence in the citys cultural panorama, beginning with its innovative aspect: it is an institutional space invented exclusively for contemporary art; which is an area where the promotion and enjoyment of the contemporary works has always been veiled and whats more, exclusive of many and worthy private initiatives.
The exhibition curated by Lorand Hegyi opens the activities of the Palazzo of the Arts of Naples in an extremely varied and articulated manner.
It is an ample and significant panorama of the unlimited potential of contemporary artistic creation.
The exhibition presents a rich display of works by over thirty great artists, from Italy and abroad, efficient interpreters of the art of the last 40 years.
Visitors can admire the masterpieces of Marina Abramovic, Jean Fabre, Gerard Garouste, Gilbert & George, Mimmo Jodice, Ilya Kabakov, William Kentridge, Maurizio Nannucci, Hermann Nitsch, Richard Nonas, Roman Opalka, Tennis Oppenheim, Mimmo Paladino, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Sarkis, Sean Scull, Kiki Smith.
A large section of the exhibition presents installations created specially to harmonise with and blend into the architecture of the spaces in the reborn Palazzo Roccella, including those of Jean Michel Alberala, Bianco-Valente, Eric Binder, Pedro Cabrita Reis, Gloria Friedmann, Denisa Lehockà, Eva Marisaldi, Luigi Ontani, Barthèlemy Toguo, Lois Weinberger.
Another section , no less important than the exhibition, is made up of the works of young artists, interpreters of the latest trends on the contemporary scene, with installation signed by Txomin Badiola, Maja Bajevic, Jerì Cernicky, Victoria Civera, Gianni Dessi, Sejla Kameric, Matthew McCaslin, Michael Milunovic, Motti Mizrachi, Yan Pei-Ming, Laszlo Revesz, Kim Sooja.
The various activities of the PAN are set out so that two floors are dedicated entirely and to the permanent display of the works.
On the ground floor there are welcoming services, a cafeteria-bookshop, a conference room and foyer space, as well as the area for temporary exhibition is the so-called "Grottone"; on the mezzanine level the administrative offices and seats of the associations; on the first floor the rooms for temporary exhibitions, the terraces and the Capuccini Garden; on the second floor the rooms for the permanent exhibition; on the third floor the Centres Management with offices and meeting rooms, an area for didactic activities, and the media library; and finally, on the forth floor, 106 m2 of guest rooms and storerooms.
