Naples, the City and the Sea - Exhibition at National Archaeological Museum (MANN)

For the first time, the findings from the Metro digs are displayed in Piazza Bovio: the Soprintendenza Speciale per i Beni Archeologici di Napoli e Pompei set an exhibition to show the results gained during the initial excavations.
The high archaeological interest over these digs is given by the revealing of part of an ancient city (close to the sea and docks), and also by the chronological range of the finds, which concerns the Byzantine period.
Naples, from the Byzantine period, was characterized by a very important renovation of the city structure, as the recent digs prove together with ancient finds retrieved in a close area at the end of the 19th century, that are also on display.
The metro excavations brought to light a piece of the city walls: a tower built with materials originally used in a monumental arch from the Severi period.
These architectural finds are very interesting for their quality and historical value: they document the fine art of the original monument, dismantled between the 6th and 7th century A.D.
A reproduction of the tower shows to visitors the context of the dig, and all the details of the archaeological works are explained.
The architectural decorations found in 1883 in the Marramarra area were used in a building, originally part of a monumental arch from the Domitian period as well as from imperial buildings of the same time.
The exhibition also displays a video which tells the most important achievements from the digs at Piazza Bovio.

How you can get there from the Hotel
From the Piazza Amedeo Station take line 2 on the subway, in the direction of Gianturco, and get off in Piazza Cavour (second stop): the National Archaeological Museum is in front of the subway Station in Piazza Museo 19.
